Baldwin Park Unified Cornerstone Students Win in Regional Art Contest

BALDWIN PARK – Students in the Elwin Elementary School Cornerstone program took home a first-place ribbon at the second annual East San Gabriel SELPA CAC Festival of the Arts for a poster titled “Our Future Is So Bright We Need to Wear Shades.”

The students were among 150 Baldwin Park special education students to take part in the daylong celebration of the arts organized by the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) of the East San Gabriel Valley Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), a consortium of 10 school districts and five charter schools.

“The students were very proud of their creation and the hard work they put into it,” Elwin Principal Patricia Cubillo de Romero said.
“We look forward to hanging it in our classroom upon its return.”

More than 850 students from across the region attended the Oct. 24 event, which included displays of student art work, live performances and skits and a series of stations allowing students to explore new ways of creating art, including sculpture.

East San Gabriel SELPA launched the Festival of Arts in 2015-16 to provide a venue for students across the region to share their art with the broader SELPA community and to inspire new ways of creating art. The program grew out of a desire to celebrate the return of students from special education programs run by the county to those under local control.

“This program is a terrific way to build bridges across the region for our students and to celebrate their talents,” Baldwin Park Unified Superintendent Froilan N. Mendoza said. “Congratulations to all of our participating students.”
