Originally intending to select just one student per school, Dr. Mendoza said he was inspired to expand the group after receiving an influx of thoughtful applications. He emphasized the importance of student input in his leadership approach, and wanted a broader range of student perspectives represented.
“I started this Council because I wanted to hear directly from students to ensure their voices help guide the decisions we make,” Dr. Mendoza said. “It’s important to me that our leadership is inclusive, and this group is a powerful step in making that happen.”
While the District has long included Student Board Members in a similar leadership role, the new Advisory Council expands that structure into a more collaborative setting with the Superintendent. All three of the District’s current Student Board Members are also members of the council, and are helping lead by example, sharing their insights and experience with their peers.
The Advisory Council meets monthly and follows a structured agenda that includes team-building icebreakers, updates on District goals and news, and an open forum to discuss current student issues. Topics have included elective offerings, field trips, campus inclusion, college and career opportunities, and course feedback.
Council members are expected to attend every meeting, actively participate, communicate respectfully, and share ideas openly. Members are encouraged to think creatively, and all contributions are valued. The group plays a key role in shaping meaningful conversations and ensuring that student experiences are reflected in District initiatives.
North Park High School students Leslie Cisneros and Valerie Portillo shared that they’re thankful for the opportunity to represent their school and be part of a group that works directly with the Superintendent. “We’re just really grateful to be part of this representing North Park, and to help share ideas that can make a difference,” they said.
Since its formation, the council has already had a strong start. Students have shared honest, thoughtful feedback, and the District has gained valuable insights into how to enhance student life and learning across campuses.
“We’re incredibly proud of the professionalism, dedication, and openness our students have shown,” Dr. Mendoza said. “Their ideas are powerful, and this Council is only the beginning. We’re excited to continue growing this work for years to come.”
The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council is expected to be an ongoing program under Dr. Mendoza’s leadership, building a lasting platform for student empowerment and continuous improvement in Baldwin Park Unified schools.
