North Park Continuation High School students took learning beyond the classroom on February 26 during a campus-wide Black History Month Art Walk, where they explored student-made art, reports, and interactive displays celebrating Black history and culture.
The event, held in the center quad, featured three stations filled with projects connecting Black history to subjects like English, math, art, and automotive. Vibrant music from Black artists played throughout the walk, creating an immersive experience for students.
Student artwork and projects included recreations of Basquiat and Henry Turner’s works, bios of Benjamin Banneker and Mae Jemison, and Alma Thomas-inspired art pieces, among others.
The interactive engagement series, led by teachers Pedro Aguilera, Eliot Alvarenga, Mr. Wong, and Ms. E., launched in 2024 with a Hispanic Heritage Month walk and aims to provide students with dynamic ways to learn.
“We want to give students opportunities to step outside of traditional lessons and interact with meaningful topics in different ways,” said ASB and Athletics teacher Rigo Torres.
North Park plans to continue the series, incorporating new themes and hands-on learning experiences in the future.
