Detectives from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office visited the Braves' campus to showcase drone technology and share real-world applications.
The event began with an informational session in the library, where detectives discussed career opportunities, the department’s use of drones for surveillance and operational planning, and laws governing drone use. Students also participated in a Q&A about drones and potential career paths.
In the second session, held in the classroom, students piloted FPV (First Person View) drones, gaining hands-on experience. Although students were already familiar with piloting drones using a controller or programming, piloting an FPV (First-Person View) drone offered a truly unique experience. This immersive opportunity enabled them to operate a different type of drone, skillfully navigate an obstacle course, and further refine their abilities in an engaging, hands-on setting.
The final part of the showcase took place outside, where officers demonstrated their largest drone, which flew 400 feet above the football field. Students were invited to view live aerial footage inside the department’s operations van, seeing firsthand how drones are used in law enforcement.
The Drones STEM CTE course, now in its second year, is led by teacher Carlos Renteria. The comprehensive two-year program equips students with the skills to manually operate drones, program autonomous flight paths, and prepares them to successfully pass the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107 license exam, ensuring they are well-prepared for professional opportunities in the drone industry. The curriculum also includes lessons in photo/video editing, 3D mapping, and other real-world applications. This course is also now articulated with Mt. San Antonio College allowing students the opportunity to earn college credit.
“This was an amazing opportunity for students to see how the skills they are learning can be applied in professional settings,” Renteria said. "We’re so thankful for the detectives sharing their expertise and inspiring our students to explore exciting career opportunities in drone technology."
This program continues to inspire students to explore the exciting career opportunities in drone technology, opening doors to a rapidly growing and innovative field.
