First-Ever Crosstown Flag Football Game Celebrates Women in Sports

The event, dubbed the “Battle of the Crown,” was a celebration of Women in Sports and marked a new chapter in the District's support for female athletes.

The evening began with a warm welcome from Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza, followed by introductions of BPHS Principal Eric Lopez and SVHS Principal Vince Pratt, who expressed their excitement for the historic event. Both teams and their coaches were presented, setting the stage for an exciting matchup.

“We are proud to be trailblazers in supporting equal opportunities for all our students, especially our women athletes,” Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza said.

Pre-game festivities included a lively DJ, enthusiastic chants from both schools' cheer teams, and a pink towel giveaway for the first 100 fans. The event fostered a sense of unity between the schools, with both sides coming together to celebrate women in sports.

Flag football, which has recently been recognized as a CIF sport and will debut as an Olympic sport in the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics, is now Baldwin Park Unified’s 13th women’s sport. The District is proud to continue expanding opportunities for its female athletes.

The first half saw Baldwin Park High School take an early lead, but by halftime, Sierra Vista High (the Dons) had surged ahead with a score of 18-8. Despite a strong push by SVHS, the second half saw BPHS come back strong, ultimately securing a 30-10 victory. Both teams displayed impressive dedication and sportsmanship throughout the game, demonstrating the growing strength of flag football in the District.

Baldwin Park Unified thanks the community members who joined us for this special evening, making the first Crosstown Flag Football Game a memorable success.
