Staying Informed: Chronic Absenteeism Notifications

October 1, 2024

Dear Baldwin Park Unified School District Families,

We are reaching out to provide you with important information regarding an initiative aimed at supporting your child’s academic success. Beginning this month, Baldwin Park Unified School District will be implementing district-wide monthly communication to notify parents or guardians when a student is identified as chronically absent.

Chronic absenteeism is defined as a student missing 10% or more of the school year. This notification is part of our effort to ensure that families are aware of the impact of attendance on their child’s learning and well-being.

Chronic absenteeism includes all absences—excused and unexcused. Our goal is not to penalize, but to partner with you in ensuring your child is present and engaged in school as much as possible. Research shows that missing even two days a month, whether for illness or other reasons, can put students at risk of falling behind academically.

You will receive communication from your child’s school should your student reach the 10% threshold of missed school days. This is simply an effort to keep you informed and to work together in finding solutions that promote consistent attendance.

We value your partnership in helping every student thrive. Thank you for your attention and commitment to your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Alicia Fields-Bolger, M.A., P.P.S.
