Baldwin Park High School Opens New Gymnasium

Baldwin Park High School unveiled its new gymnasium on Saturday, May 18, marking the first major remodel since its original construction in the 1950s. Over 200 community members, including alumni, students, families, and staff, attended the grand opening event.

The celebration featured a special ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by the Board of Education, Superintendent, and Members of Cabinet followed by a walk-through of the new facility, student sports games, raffles, and more. The new gym project, which was under construction for a year and a half, was supported by Measures K and AE.

The new gymnasium boasts several impressive features and highlights:

  • Total area of 24,000 square feet, up from the previous 14,500 square feet
  • Total occupancy of 2,590 with bleacher seating for 1,562 guests, compared to the previous 700-800 seats
  • Three basketball courts, three volleyball courts, and eight badminton courts
  • Two state-of-the-art digital display scoreboards
  • Two competition wrestling mats with innovative storage
  • Conference room
  • Bathrooms
  • Media lobby
  • Trophy case display
  • Locker rooms and showers
  • Staff offices
  • Metal roof structure with air conditioned spaces
  • Updated pool area fencing

Students can now enjoy a larger gym equipped with air conditioning, enhancing opportunities in athletics, performing arts, student activities, and more. Construction of the new gym was led by HMC Architects, Balfour Beatty, and Element Consulting, focusing on sustainability and high-performance architecture.

“This gym represents a significant investment in our students and community. We look forward to seeing our students reach new heights in all their goals,” Baldwin Park High School Principal Eric Lopez said.

Bond Measure AE was approved by voters in 2018, and is funding the enhancement of learning facilities and the expansion of school safety and security. This project is supervised by the local Citizens’ Oversight Committee. The community's support and the upgraded amenities mark a new era for Baldwin Park High School, promising a brighter future for its extracurricular programs.

“The completion of this project is a testament to the unwavering support of our community and city. Together, we have brought to life a facility that will benefit students for generations to come,” Superintendent Dr. Froilan Mendoza said.
