Four students from Baldwin Park are participating in the first cohort of enthusiastic interns of the Project SEARCH Kaiser Permanente program. The internship is geared to extending workplace knowledge for adult students in their last year of the Adult Transition Program.
Learning takes place entirely at Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park, providing a blend of classroom instruction, career exploration, and hands-on training in selected departments. At the core of this yearlong program is providing an immersive experience designed to prepare interns for the challenges and opportunities encountered in future jobs.
The internship curriculum teaches students employable skills, soft skills, transferable job skills as well as functional life skills in a real world setting. Students rotate between internships learning: team building, accessing workplace technologies, social skills, health and wellness, communication skills, interviewing skills, money management, and job search skills.
“We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has collaborated together to make this program happen. We appreciate all the support and are excited about the positive impact this program will have on the lives and careers of our interns and the adults supporting them, ” said BPUSD Senior Director of Special Education Sarah Ammon.
The District has worked closely with Kaiser Baldwin Park to select departments that will provide interns with real-work experiences and hands-on training. After the interns complete a three-week orientation, at which time they will be covering a range of topics essential for workplace success, they will begin a six-week internship rotation learning the skills specific to that department. Within the internship rotations, interns will gain exposure to various aspects of the specific departments, honing their skills, allowing them to explore different roles and responsibilities, and help them to make informed decisions about their future job goals and interests.
