Ranking up from their previous Gold Award, De Anza Elementary is celebrating their first ever Platinum Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) Award. This is also the first Platinum Award for Baldwin Park Unified.
“We are very excited and proud to be recognized with this award. Our teachers and staff work so hard throughout the school year to foster ways to get our students involved. PBIS has made such a great impact for us at De Anza,” expressed De Anza Elementary Principal Caroline K. Lau.
In support of their PBIS program, De Anza’s campus is decorated with multiple signs and posters that celebrate their “SIRR” behavior expectations. SIRR is their acronym that stands for Safety, Integrity, Respect, and Responsibility (SIRR), and any classroom can happily recite it loud and proud.
“One of the ways we encourage our students is through our De Anza Dragons “SIRR” behavior chant. It helps our students practice positive actions and encourages them to work together,” said Julie Garcia-Walker, Curriculum, Technology Intervention Coach at De Anza Elementary.
Additional techniques that inspire their strong campus culture include: incentivized Dragon Dollars for students given by teachers and staff for demonstrating positive behavior, opportunities for the fourth and fifth grade students to be role models by helping and guiding younger grade levels, and the chance to participate in fun campus events and assemblies, among other techniques.
